Every entrepreneur’s story is unique, marked by moments of triumph, failure, learning, and growth. My journey, too, has been a tapestry woven with dreams, setbacks, and unshakable faith in the power of perseverance. From the earliest days of burning charcoal to my current mission of social entrepreneurship, my life’s work has been driven by a deep desire to serve others, build sustainable communities, and create opportunities for those around me. This is the story of my entrepreneurial journey, one that never truly ends.
The Humble Beginnings: From Charcoal Burning to Casual Labor
My entrepreneurial spirit was born out of necessity. Growing up in Meru, Kenya, I saw the struggles of my family and community and knew that I had to make a way for myself. It wasn’t easy, but I was determined. I started by doing odd jobs—casual labor on farms and even charcoal burning, which at the time seemed like the only viable way to earn some money. I used every opportunity, no matter how small, to raise capital for something bigger.
The Birth of Snowline Food Market
In 1999, after completing my Form Four education, I opened my first business venture—Snowline Food Market—at the Kwa Makara Shopping Centre along the Timau-Nanyuki road. I sold groceries, cereals, and other essentials to the local community, as well as to travelers heading to North Eastern Kenya. This humble kiosk became my first real taste of entrepreneurship.
As my small shop grew, I hired a few of my neighbors as employees, marking the beginning of a deeper understanding of business and leadership. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of a much larger entrepreneurial journey, one that would push me beyond my limits and introduce me to challenges that would shape my character.
Roasting Groundnuts in Campus
When I entered Moi University in Eldoret, I knew that my entrepreneurial spirit would never allow me to sit idle. Even though I was a full-time student, I found ways to continue building my ventures. I started roasting groundnuts in my campus room—turning my dormitory into a makeshift peanut roasting business. With a big sufuria and candles, I sealed my packets, and soon enough, I became known as the peanut wholesaler on campus.
This venture not only earned me money but also helped me realize my desire to lead. I ran for the position of Assistant Secretary General in the Moi University Students Organization. It wasn’t just about the position—it was about serving my fellow students and becoming a positive force on campus. The campaign was intense, and while I didn’t win, the experience was invaluable. It cemented my belief in the power of leadership and service to others.
The Entrepreneurial Exploit Beyond Campus Boundaries
After university, I didn’t stop. I ventured into mobile phone accessories and parts, a business that saw me employ several people. However, life threw me a curveball. I was conned out of my entire fortune by people I considered close friends. It was a devastating blow, but instead of letting it break me, I picked up the pieces and began again. The lesson was harsh but clear—trust must be earned, and nothing in business is ever guaranteed.
The Political Venture: A Close Call
I soon turned my focus to local leadership, aiming to serve my community in a different capacity. I vied for the Councillor seat in Kirimaara Ward of Meru County, believing that I could make a difference. The election was tight, and I lost by a mere 11 votes. It was disheartening, but instead of giving up, I decided to start again, knowing that true leadership comes from resilience and the willingness to serve no matter the outcome.
The Rise of Snowline Cosmetics and Snowline Food Industries Ltd
From the ashes of political defeat, I found a new purpose. The birth of Snowline Cosmetics and later Snowline Food Industries Ltd marked the next phase of my entrepreneurial journey. With a strong desire to empower others, I expanded my operations. What began as a small venture into cosmetics grew into a full-scale food industry. I ventured into poultry farming, starting with 30,000 birds and later expanding to 300 pigs, contributing to the local economy and creating jobs in my community.
Black Jungle Resort and Lounge: A Dream Deferred
Along the way, I envisioned the Black Jungle Resort and Lounge, a project that would bring together business, leisure, and tourism in Meru. However, my dream took an unexpected turn when it became associated with a strip club, an association that I could not endorse. This experience taught me a powerful lesson about staying true to your values and the importance of aligning your business with a purpose that honors your community and beliefs.
The Igati Call: A Mission of Social Entrepreneurship
Today, my journey has come full circle with the creation of Igati Creative and Innovators NGO, where we focus on social entrepreneurship and empowering local communities. Igati—which means raw salt in my native Kimeru—represents the calling to be the salt and light of the earth, a guiding principle for all our endeavors. Through our One Million Bee Hive Project and other community-driven initiatives, we are committed to transforming Meru County and beyond, creating sustainable livelihoods, promoting food security, and uplifting the dignity of the people.
A Never-Ending Journey
My entrepreneurial journey has been one of constant growth, resilience, and divine inspiration. From the charcoal burning days to the highs and lows of business, politics, and leadership, every step has been a testament to the power of faith, determination, and a willingness to serve. Though my path has been filled with twists and turns, I know that the mission is far from over. The journey of social entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint, and there’s always more to learn and accomplish.
